Driving on the airfield will always be a learning experience however it is your decision whether or not you are prepared. If you know you are going to be driving on the airfield, find your trainer and make sure you are trained properly so that you feel comfortable on the airfield. An anticipatory runway incursion prevention system (ARIPS) cannot only predict and detect runway incursions (RI), but also give explicit instructions and/or suggestions to pilots/drivers to avoid the RI and collision beforehand. However, complacency whenever it comes to training may result in loss of airfield driving privileges, permanent marks on your record, and the possibility of sustaining serious life threatening injuries or even death. Runway Incursions are a very serious problem but have a very simple fix, if you take the time to learn your phraseology and the layout of your airfield, a runway incursion will not ever have to be a worry for you. If you feel as though you would be lost on the airfield driving by yourself, it is important that you reinforce training you've already been through, and review your local AFI referring to driving on your airfield until you are comfortable enough to operate a vehicle confidently on the airfield. Other contributing factors in runway incursions may include: inadequate signage and markings, complicated airfield designs, and inadequate airfield training. It is vital that before you accept the responsibility of driving on an airfield that you know communications are the number one thing in preventing runway incursions. A contributing factor can be a breakdown in communications on the airfield and often involves: use of non-standardized phraseology, failure to provide correct read back of an instruction, misunderstanding the controllers instructions, accepting clearance meant for another aircraft or vehicle, or blocked transmissions. Although they are not a new problem, current runway incursion reports indicate that general aviation operations accounts for the largest percentage of runway incursions. Explain that runway incursions can and have led to serious accidents with significant loss of life.
